Inconel 601®, otherwise known as nickel alloy 601, pyromet® 601, Nicrofer® 601, or UNS N06601, is a general-purpose engineering material that contains great resistance to heat and corrosion. The Inconel 601® chemical composition of high chromium and some aluminum ensures good resistance to heat and corrosion while also maintaining high strength and good workability. Nickel alloy 601 provides excellent metallurgical stability and a high resistance to carburization, hardened and strengthened further through a cold work process. The many attributes and chemical composition of Inconel 601® make this very versatile for many applications.
Magellan Metals offers Inconel 601® from our Inconel® metals in a variety of formats for any need. Contact us for more Inconel 601® information or request a quote for more specific options.
Inconel 601® Available Formats and Products
Magellan Metals offers Inconel 601® in a variety of forms depending on the need. Our forms are provided with different characteristics to ensure the best size to meet exact specifications. Inconel 601® sheet is available in thicknesses ranging from 0.10 to 0.120” with Inconel 601® strip available up to 24” wide. The Inconel01® plate is available up to 2” thick. Inconel 601® bar comes up to 3” diameter, and seamless pipe is available up to 4” NB. Larger sizes are available in welded construction and can be fabricated to order. Inconel 601® tubing is not commonly available but can be produced to order. In addition, butt-weld and forged fittings are available or can be manufactured with short lead times. Through our options, we also offer many services to provide metal solutions for any need. Overall, Magellan Metals offers the following formats of Inconel 601®:Inconel 601® Chemical Composition
Inconel 601® is a nickel-chromium-iron alloy in which the chemical composition is primarily defined by its high nickel and chromium content. The nickel alloy typically contains 58.0-63.0% nickel, 21.0-25.0% chromium, and the balance is iron. Other controlled elements such as aluminum, manganese, silicon, and sulfur assist with maintaining its heat and corrosion resistance while adding additional benefits.Nickel Alloy 601 Mechanical and Physical Properties
The Inconel 601® chemical composition provides many great mechanical and physical properties to maintain the resistance and versatility of the material. The high chromium and nickel content contribute to excellent resistance to oxidation while keeping high strength. Overall, the mechanical and physical properties of Inconel 601® include:- Tensile Strength: 110,000 psi (760 MPa)
- Yield Strength: 65,300 psi (450 MPa)
- Elongation at Break: 42%
- Density: 8.11 Mg/m3
- Melting Range: 2,480-2,571°F (1,360-1,411°C)
- Optimal Temperature: 1,004°F (540°C) above for solution-treated and below for annealed
Fabrication and Working Instructions for Inconel 601®
Nickel alloy 601 has great machinability, welding, and forming options, and can be worked through standard procedures. However, it is strongly recommended to clean Inconel 601® from oil or paint before heating. To properly fabricate and work Inconel 601®, a low-sulfur atmosphere and fuel source must be provided, and the nickel alloy should be heated in furnaces with a slightly reducing atmosphere. Cold work and annealing treatment are recommended for strengthening, as heat treatment doesn’t work with Inconel 601® being annealed at 2,100°F (1,149°C) and then cooled rapidly through the 1,000-1,400°F (540-760°C) range to prevent thermal cracking. Rapid cooling does not affect the mechanical properties of nickel alloy 601. In addition, pickling must be used to produce bright surfaces on parts that have been previously heated due to the aluminum and chromium content.Inconel 601® Applications
The versatility and resistance to corrosion and high temperatures make Inconel 601® ideal for many applications. Common uses include atmospheres where extreme conditions require critical resistance. Some applications of Inconel 601® include:- Radiant Tubes
- Power Generation
- Chemical Processing
- Catalyst Support Grids
- Aerospace Engines and Gas Turbines
- Thermal Processing Equipment
- High-Temperature Applications in Automotive
- Pollution-Control
